A reply message denotes a return from a procedure call. This is an explicit representation of the return, which if it is not present, is implied in the synchronous message.
Explanation
A return from a procedure can be shown explicitly on a diagram by the use of the reply message. In many circumstances return messages are not represented on diagrams as they are implied in the synchronous message. This can be a little confusing as the message is represented by an arrowhead, without any representation of the return, which is simply implied.
